Obesity

The COEC staff has developed The Skinny on the Science of Obesity, a workshop about the global obesity epidemic and how to help our kids, schools and communities stay healthy.

Childhood obesity in the US is an alarming epidemic: one in 5 children is considered overweight to obese. Type II diabetes in children is on the rise. What are the causes of obesity? Are they genetic, environmental or both? How can we as educators help our students understand the health and lifestyle implications of obesity? What can we do in our classrooms, schools and communities to initiate change?

The 4-hour workshop features engaging activities and discussions about emerging scientific research at UNC-Chapel Hill. By work- shop’s end, participants have a greater understanding of the causes and consequences of obesity and practical ideas for connecting health and wellness education to students’ lives.

The Skinny on the Science of Obesity is available free to North Carolina educators and state officials and could be modified for interested community groups.
